About the Artist

Dawn Hanson, aka "The Liberal Artist," is best described as a mixed media artist, but at heart, she is a quilter. During her college years and throughout her early 20s, she focused on patchwork quilting, doing all of her piecing, quilting and binding by hand, just as her grandmother and great-grandmother had done.

In the early 1990s, Dawn learned to machine quilt, thanks to a technique introduced by renowned quilter Harriet Hargrave. Thus began a whole new love affair with quilting and for the next decade, Dawn cranked out countless baby quilts, wall hangings and bed-sized projects for friends and family. During this time, she lived in Copenhagen, Denmark where she founded a quilting group named the Quilt Tasters, which continues to meet regularly to this day.

In the year 2000, after a decade of living abroad, a career move took the Louisiana native to Northeast Ohio. Dawn began to focus on art quilts and also discovered the joys of mixed media on canvas, woodworking and other forms of creative expression. In the fertile political landscape of Cleveland, Dawn also became somewhat of a social activist, donating her time and energy to Planned Parenthood and to other progressive nonprofit and political organizations.

In 2005, her passions for art and activism merged and she created her first political quilt, The Reproductive Freedom Flag. Since that time, she has worked with a variety of media and often used her art as a commentary on equality and justice in America. In 2014, she found her Reproductive Freedom Flag in the national spotlight and she couldn’t be happier.

Dawn lives in Cleveland Heights with her husband and two rescued-dogs. She is an avid gardener, collector of vintage fabrics, buttons and cool rusty old things she is just sure she can incorporate into her artwork (someday and somehow). Dawn is co-president and chief operating officer of an award-winning communications and marketing firm. She founded it in 2006, after leaving the corporate world, to work exclusively with well-intentioned, socially responsible clients. She is, and always will be, a proud liberal who joyfully sews her politics into the fabric – and canvas – of her art.

A true liberal artist, Dawn donates a generous portion of all proceeds from sales on this website (and elsewhere) to worthy progressive nonprofit organizations.
